It will do line level output so it works well with the powered speaker. This is important- whatever is between your guitar and the powered speaker has to be able to pump the signal up to line level to get a good sound. It sounds very satisfying even in my living room. It sounds different, not worse, and offers a ton of flexibility that the Fenders don’t.

But onstage with horns, bass and drums no one can hear the differences. Things that we sweat out in our living rooms are totally overwhelmed onstage once the other musicians get into it- especially drums which have the widest sonic footprint in the room and mask a lot of the information from the other instruments.

A common misconception about guitar amps is that they are used solely to amplify sound. Most amplifiers are also able to modify the tone of an instrument by emphasizing or de-emphasizing certain frequencies, and by adding effects to create different sounds. Amps were first used in the s as a way to amplify the sound of acoustic guitars. However, their use became more popular in the s when Hawaiian music surged in popularity.

Initially, tone control on guitar amps was simple and could provide a lot of treble boost. However, their low power, and limited control gave poor high treble and bass output. In the s, musicians began to experiment with distortion by overdriving guitar amps. Later on, most guitar amps came with preamplifier distortion controls, fuzz boxes, and other units designed to produce distorted sounds. Today, the overdrive and distortion produced by guitar amps are important elements to many styles of electric guitar music.

Vintage amps come in two standard forms: A wide range of vintage amps exist, some intended for general purposes, where others are designed for particular instruments or sounds.

Tweet on Twitter Ca. Among the major players in the American market were the many importers and distributors who enriched the guitar landscape with instruments — usually at the lower ends of the market brought in from other countries, primarily from Europe, Asia, and to a lesser extent, Latin America. The analogy with automobiles is obvious. Univox was one of the first brands to make copies, and the brand achieved a fair amount of national visibility and distribution.

Univox was not, as you might guess, just another isolated Japanese import, but was part of a much larger story of its importer, the Merson company. Unfortunately, not many reference materials are available to document in complete detail, but we can hit some of the highlights, and illuminate a number of relationships along the way. If you have catalogs, ads or pictures of guitars that can help fill in some of the blanks, please let me know Michael Wright, PO Box , Philadelphia, PA Tempo Merson was a distribution organization founded by a man named Bernie Mersky.

At some point, Merson was taken over by Ernie Briefel.

Although these were great amps, due to the electronic design, they never seemed to have the power and tone of Fender amps and subsequently were not as popular. Guild offered some traditional looking hollow body and semi-hollow body models such as the T , the Starfire , the Capri and the DE model. Guild also offered a Starfire Bass Guitar. I’ve seen this guitar offered with only a single pickup, that was usually mounted by the bridge although some came with a pickup in the neck position.

The Guild Thunderbird was a real anomaly. Its body sort of resembled the clay cartoon figure Gumby. Perhaps it was Guilds answer to the Fender Jazzmaster. The Thunderbird came with some unusual electronics, a vibrato bar and a spring loaded metal bar that was built into the guitars back. This feature and the two corners on the bottom of the body allowed the guitar to have a built in stand.

Guild also offered a budget version of this guitar with a slightly different shape called The Jetstar. Guild was never big in the amplifier department, but the did come out with the Guild Thunder amplifier with numeral designations based on the amps power. Guild’s amplifiers were actually made by Valco. Ironically the name Guild was originally attached to a little known amplifier company that was going out of business.

February 28, , I decided ta take yer word, an my gut feeling, and purchase a xlt It’ll be here in a few days, an I am totally stoked. I’ll add ten cabs eventually. But found this deal too good to resist, and I made the purchase. Yeah, that graph amazing, showin what the enhance does. Two notches is as much as I’ll ever need. I play fretless in a heavier act, and mids are my friend.

I took a day yesterday an fooled wit the amp as much as I could. Somewhere on the site I found a pic of the frequency select knobs, complete with the points at which the frequency centers occur. Now I have this thing dialed, tho it would seem the eq is better suited for boost applications, as cutting takes a lot of output away, even with one notch adjustments.

Everyone is looking for Traynor nameplates, many amps are missing them. Early amps have a script (Fenderish) logo, later ones have a more industrial looking parallelogram logo. Traynor amps have very vague and unhelpfull manuals, fortunately, the amp is very .

The amp has four speakers, but I’m not sure if they are size 10″ or 12″. The amp simply has a number of parameters in a row including from left to right for volume, bright, treble, bass, selectone which goes from fixed to fixed settings , selective boost, and boost volume. While some of these parameters aren’t often seen, after playing with the amp for a bit I got a pretty good idea of what everything did.

Getting a good sounding isn’t too hard, and there is a lot of room for getting different types of sounds between the parameters. Since this is a pretty old amp, I’ve never had access to a manual but I also never felt that I needed one. I’ve never really used the amp with effects as I like the clean sound that this gets.

I usually use the amp with a Fender Strat or Jazzmaster and find that this combination gets me a clean sound that is pretty bright. Depending on the guitar that you are using, it is also possible to get some slightly over driven sounds that sound pretty cool as well. I also like using this amp for bass guitar, as even though it doesn’t necessary have all of the thump that you would look for in a bass amp, it still gets you a pretty full tone.

Next, if applicable look for the date code on the tube chart. Here is a cool link to a Vintage Fender Amp price history chart that tracks sales data for specific amp models by the month. Wide panel, narrow panel, brown, blonde, and black face amps have a date code hand-stamped on the tube chart. This code is made up of two letters. The first letter translates to the year and the second to the month. The reissue amps also made use of this code.

Electronic components such as transformers, potentiometers, speakers, and some capacitors are often stampted with a date code indicating who manufactured them and when.
